Roll Against Racism 1986
Roland Cosby has spent many years in the Boston metropolitan area promoting community organizing
through art, music and sports (primarily ice skating and roller skating. He created, organized and directed
“Roll Against Racism”, an event held in Copley Square for several years that featured art, music and roller
skating competitions such as roller dancing. “Roll Against Racism” served as a fundraiser for The
Covenant and for the Copley YWCA and drew thousands of participants and spectators every year. Roland
also worked with many other non-profit organizations such as Boston Urban Gardeners, MDC Skatelab
Project, Dorchester Arts Council, ABCD (Resident Artist Program and Special Environment Projects) and
Cultural Resource Workshop. During his work with these organizations, Roland produced many different
types of artwork, including large-scale outdoor and indoor murals, group murals with children, portable
murals on plywood sheets, trashcan art (painted trashcans to encourage use and discourage littering), round
paintings to be used as tabletops and flat table-sized food murals made from vegetables and fruit. Roland
has also worked on group projects with other community artists such as Sidewalk Sam and Dana Chandler.
Roland has studied art and taken art-related courses at University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth and at
Massachusetts College of Art. He is now continuing his art education at the Museum School of Fine Arts in
Boston and works at Studio 39 in Brookline.
In the past several years, Roland has worked on many art projects with both businesses and non-profit
organizations, assisting them in introducing fine art into their environments. Gorman Insurance, Mike’s
Auto Repair, and Herb Chambers BMW are current on-going projects. Roland is working with these
businesses to develop artistic interior spaces that will create warm and friendly environments for both
workers and clients.
